Things to Do Around Johannesburg
Johannesburg, which is the largest city in South Africa, is a fabulous holiday destination for many reasons. Being one of the best known cities in the world, Johannesburg has a lot to live up to – which it does, with a variety of split personalities, which only a visit will truly let you discover.
One of the most fascinating things about Johannesburg is its unique combination of its dark past alongside today’s social regeneration and urban renewal. While Johannesburg may in the past have been a dangerous city where gun crime abounded and social inequality was at the forefront of the cultural sphere, today, the city is far safer and more self-confident. Tourists travelling to this incredible city can expect to meet with a destination that still shows the scars from its powerful past, but they will also discover a city that is taking strides to move on towards a better future.
With the city being in the southern hemisphere, Johannesburg switches summer and winter temperatures with its counterparts in the northern hemisphere, making it ideal for a winter escape as that’s when the heat is truly on. In truth, Johannesburg’s temperatures are quite similar to Britain’s, hitting perhaps only a few degrees higher than you’d find at home. Its winter (our summers) tend to be warmer, however, but still not exactly warm.
A beautiful city to look at, Johannesburg is packed with plenty of examples of fine South African architecture, and houses the tallest buildings in the country. Nature lovers will never have to travel too long before stumbling across one the city’s many beautiful green spaces, as there are plenty of parks around the city which are excellent places to stop for lunch. At night, Johannesburg comes to life as bars and restaurants tempt tourists and locals alike to sample some of the incredible South African fare, before heading into one of the excellent local nightclubs to dance the night away to Kwato music, which is considered to be the city’s local genre of music.
Returning to your hotel Johannesburg you’ll undoubtedly be exhausted, which is all the more reason to get an excellent night’s sleep before the next day. After all, with attractions like the Mandela Museum, the Apartheid Museum, art museums, UNESCO World Heritage Site the Cradle of Humankind and myriad shopping opportunities, you’re going to need to be well rested before you set out once again!
