The Best of Dakar

Dakar is the capital city of Senegal, West Africa. Located midway between the Senegal and Gambia on the Cape Verde Peninsula, Dakar is partly fronted by limestone cliffs and lies in close proximity to the most westerly point of Africa.

A colourful, vibrant and exciting destination, you can make the most of the West Africa’s nature as well as explore Dakar’s city centre which is packed with night markets, bars, cinemas and live music venues.

The Senegalese are renowned for their hospitality which is evident when visiting one of the many city centre venues. Gazelle is one of the most popular local beers and an authentic Dakar experience is to grab a street side seat and watch the world go by whilst sampling the local produce.

You will also come across an abundance of street stalls selling all sorts of tasty snacks, from warm roasted peanuts to other nuts, fruits and treats that will give you a true taste of Senegal.

When it comes to shopping you can browse and buy almost anything you like. From traditional fabrics, carpets and rugs to fish markets and electronic gadgets, head to Marche Sandaga or Marche HLM, just a few of the many street markets Senegal is host to.

For a slightly different feel, explore the waterfront neighbourhood of Fann Corniche. Both elegant and peaceful, this is the ideal spot for a wander around and lies in close proximity to the city centre.

The Great Mosque is a must-see sight in Dakar and one of the most important religious buildings in Senegal’s capital city. The African Renaissance Monument (Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine) is the world’s tallest solid copper statue, standing taller than the Statue of Liberty, and stands on one of the hills overlooking Dakar.

Night-time activities are as varied as daytime options and you can dance the night away if you feel like it. Nightclubs, live music bars and other evening venues are brimming with boundless energy and excitement making it easy to get caught up in the spirit of things.

Due to Dakar’s location, arrival and departure should not present you with any problems. There are frequent flights connecting Dakar to the rest of Africa, Europe and further afield. The natural lay of the land means Dakar has one of the west coast’s best ports and travelling by ferry is a straightforward affair. If you are arriving or leaving by train, the station is just 500m north of Place de l'Indépendance.

Either walking or making use of the numerous taxis, minibuses and other forms of transport is all that is required to get you out and about and most hotels in Dakar lie in close proximity to the city centre.
