Tenerife Winter Sunshine Tempts Cold Brits To The Sun

Below zero temperatures and heavy snowfalls in December have seen many Brits visit High Street travel agents and go online for a break in the sun - and the Canary Island of Tenerife is getting a tourism boost early in their winter holidays season.

Tenerife is already known by millions in Europe as an ideal getaway from their own winter weather for a susnhine break, but the cold weather in the UK has led to a surge of enquiries for holidays and flights, and while the British shivered with temperatures often below freezing point, a look at the Tenerife weather forecast where it was sunny and in the 70's farenheit has led to a good number making bookings for both now and later in the year.

The cold weather hit the UK early, and often December is mild, but Scotland for example had its worst snow for forty years while the rest of the country was also badly hit, including London with scenes more reminiscent of a bitterly cold February rather than December, and sub zero temperatures stayed for weeks.

Airports across the country closed, including regional ones like Bournemouth in the south, and Gatwick which serves as the main gateway for Londoners, ironically leaving many who wanted to start their Tenerife holidays not being able to reach it.

25 centimetres of snow had fallen in just one day in Charlwood West Sussex, which is close to the airport, and despite all efforts to clear the runways the weather got the better of those trying to clear it for days, with no flights arriving or leaving.

The train service was also hit throughout the country with most services badly delayed or cancelled altogether. Trains serving London Victoria, Charing Cross and Cannon Street were cancelled or delayed and Eurostar with their services to Paris and Brussels was delayed by up to 90 minutes.

There was also disruption on First Hull Trains, CrossCountry and East Midlands train services. But when the airports were finally open again and people were able to take their Tenerife flights, what could they expect to find on the island that would make their trip worthwhile?

The obvious first answer given the conditions people were leaving home from is the weather, and even in December day time temperatures were around 20 degrees centigrade - mid 60's to low 70's farenheit - and most of the winter months are similar, making it a great place for early Tenerife holidays while those at home are contending with the cold and snow.

You can find anything in Tenerife that you would expect to find in a major European tourist location. There are water parks, theateres, golf courses, restaurants, shopping and much more. The island does have its own particular flavour, though, and even with all of the European influence on the island it is unmistakably Tenerife.

For those who like to take in a bit of sun, the island features a dozen Blue Flag beaches - to gain a blue flag the beaches have been analysed and evaluated for cleanliness and an environmentally friendly operation. Tenerife offers visitors five national parks for hiking, bicycling and walking. For golfers, golf is one of Tenerife's most popular sports, second only to water sports, and many of the courses are open year round.

More people are taking all inclusive trips to make their holidays more affordable for their 2011 holidays, with tour operators having secured some good Tenerife hotels for their clients to stay in, and while the economy is still fragile it's a trend that's likely to continue for some time - checking package deals offered by the likes of Thomson and Thomas Cook can result in good overall savings.

The British weather has got the island off to a great start for 2011, but a visit to Tenerife is good at any time of the year, not just the winter.
