See more of Europe: visit Amsterdam by rail

When you factor in airport transfers and waiting times, air travel between the UK and Europe is not necessarily the quickest or most convenient option. As rail services between London and the continent become faster and more frequent, rail travel is making many European destinations more accessible than ever.

Rail travel in Europe is simple and hassle-free. Stations are usually located in the heart of the city centre, making it easy to find accommodation close by; there are no baggage limits, you can bring your own food and drink and there are no lengthy check-in or security queues – you just need to be on the train before it leaves.

Once on board, the benefits of travelling by train continue. Through the window of your carriage you’ll be able to take in the landscape of the European countryside, a contrast to your final city destination, and you have the freedom to stroll the carriages as you please. Rail travel is also a sound environmental choice, creating far fewer emissions than travelling by air.

Travelling over land may seem like a slower way to go, but shorter connection times in Paris and Brussels and faster services from London to the continent have made a huge improvement to journey times.

High-speed rail links once you reach the continent have also had a big impact on travel time. On a short, two-night break to Amsterdam travelling by train no longer cuts down your sightseeing time – depending on connections, you can now reach the Dutch capital from London in under 5 hours.

Travelling from London to Amsterdam, you’ll need to change trains at Brussels Midi. Once you have left the train at Brussels Midi, look out for the TV screens and departure boards around the platform and concourse to find the correct platform for you ongoing train. Changing trains on your way to Amsterdam should take around 20 minutes, but be aware there may be queues as you leave the train at Brussels Midi. On your return journey your connection time should be longer to allow for checking in to the London-bound train.

With an early departure from London and a short waiting time for you changeover in Brussels, getting the train to Amsterdam could easily mean you’ll be there in time for lunch. These quick and convenient connections leave you plenty of time to enjoy your short break exploring the winding streets, canals and cafes of Amsterdam.
