Explore Devon by Bicycle
Devon is one of the largest counties in south west England and also one of its most picturesque. While many people choose to explore this majestic area by car, in truth you only get to see so much of the local areas and points of interest when you’re speeding along on four wheels. If you truly want to get to know Devon properly and ensure you spot every little detail, one of the best ways to go about doing so is to switch four wheels for two. And that doesn’t mean simply use a motorbike instead.
Exploring Devon by bicycle is a popular way to see the countryside, and the county has been dubbed as something of a bicycle county thanks to the number of people using bikes to get around. While it may seem like biking all around Devon is a large task at first, when you consider the convenience of using the local trains to help you and your bike get to certain areas, everything becomes more accessible. You’ll be able to visit the big towns and cities such as Plymouth, Exeter and Torbay, as well as settlements in more rural areas like Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Newton Ferrers. You’ll be able to take in the majestic sights offered by the Bolt Head cliffs which stretch for ten kilometres and see the amazing beach at Slapton Sands.
Checking out this fantastic area by bike can be a learning experience too. Devon was so named thanks to the type of rock most prominent in the land. The geological period giving the county its name, the Devonian period, was one involving masses of grey limestone – the rock that lies in abundance in Devon. If on a family trip, why not encourage the kids to get to recognise this type of stone and identify it whenever they see it?
One of the best things about exploring areas by bike is the appetite you’ll work up. And Devon being a homely county that is stocked with towns and villages where there’s always good food on offer, you can be sure of the heartiest meals when you stop for a break. And if there’s anywhere in particular you find yourself wanting to visit, for food or for otherwise, just remember that it’s simple to take your bikes on trains around Devon and get to where you need to go quickly and with a minimum of fuss!
