Deer, Urban, & Country Parks

A park is a natural or semi-natural state area that is built for human recreation and enjoyment or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. In a park, you find rocks, soil, water, flora, and fauna, and grass areas.

The first parks were deer parks. Deer parks, also referred to as medieval deer parks, were enclosed areas containing deer and were bounded by a ditch and bank with a wooden park pale on top of the bank. The ditch was designed to be made on the inside to allow deer to enter the park and prevent them from leaving.

Some deer parks were built in the Anglo-Saxon era. Upon the conquest of William the Conqueror in 1066, deer parks flourished under the Normans’ influence. Deer parks became popular places for England’s landed gentry. The Norman kings established forest law to protect these parks. They also allowed members of the nobility and senior clergy to maintain deer parks.
