Atlanta, When It Rains

Many properties in Atlanta were destroyed last year because of continuous rain that resulted to great flooding. It was estimated that the cost of damage was approximately %400 million and there were ten casualties. The flood surpassed the water level of dams, making it the worst flood catastrophe in the history of Atlanta. In fact, the amount of rain was said to be equivalent to 500 years of floods.

Rain started falling on September 15, 2009 around the Atlanta area and continued until the eighteenth of September, although it was only on the nineteenth that heavy rain started to pick up with a recorded 3.70 inches of rainfall from morning to around 8pm. It was reported that the remote areas in Atlanta had a 5-inch rain fall and went non stop for over 13 hours. It was made clear to the people in Atlanta to not drive around because the road was already flooded. Because transportation become so difficult, many schools were closed. Water leves in the Chattahoochee River raised up to 20% which is reported to be the second highest in its history. Because of this, Peachtree-Dunwoody Road bridge was destroyed. The second largest sewage treatment in Southeastern United States, the R.M. Clayton Sewage Treatment Plant located near the river, had its water level rising by 4 feet as the water levels on the river continued to rise. Because of flooding, Kellog Company was forced to shut down.

The Georgia government reacted by requesting a disaster declaration for counties Bartow, Carroll, Cherokee, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Heard, Newton, Paulding, and Rockdale Catoosa, Chattooga, and Walker. It was on the 24th of September that the request was approved by Pres. Obama. This shows that each county, not only the ones near a great dam or river, should have a disaster preparedness committee that could act decisively during catastrophes like this to lessen the damage. Atlanta, until now, is still recovering from that disaster.

The flood brough it with a lot of bacteria and fungi, thus, all the flood victims need to clean up their house. Fungi can be devastating to a house because it weakens its foundation. Allergies, rashes, and other skin ailments could also be caused by the microorganisms. However, fungi is just part of your problem.
