Violence in the Workplace Training Gives New Meaning to Job Security

It happens to everyone in the workplace at some point: people get burned out, disillusioned and unhappy; people who are having difficulty managing stress take out that stress on their coworkers, whether unprovoked or not; people who feel like they lack control over certain aspects of their lives try to compensate for it by exerting selfish forms of control over others, often via abuse of their position of authority. Due to social conditioning and stigma, those who seek personal, professional help are fewer than those who attempt to “tough it out” – and, every once in a while, a news story emerges about someone who's been pushed past  breaking point and resorted to drastic, desperate measures, sometimes causing grievous harm. All these are reasons why violence in the workplace training is so important: such signs need to be recognized and dealt with in a timely fashion before anyone comes to irreparable grief.

“But nobody at work is violent, so why do we need violence in the workplace training?” you may be asking. Violence in the workplace training deals with more than just acts of bodily harm, since workplace misconduct is not necessarily limited to such. “Well, what else is there?” you may now be wondering. There are several topics that fall within the purview of violence in the workplace training, including but not limited to the following:

•    stalking and harassment
•    sex offenses
•    extortion
•    kidnapping
•    product defamation and tampering
•    inappropriate behavior (e.g. threats) towards or from an employee, customer, shareholder, client, etc.
•    verbal abuse
•    issues of domestic violence intruding upon the work environment
•    inappropriate letters, emails, phone calls, text messages and visits
•    misconduct as a result of a major change (e.g. downsizing)
•    bomb threats
•    concerns regarding arson, sabotage, intentional biological contamination (e.g. anthrax), poisoning, etc.
•    safe hiring and firing
•    misuse of company assets
•    labor-management disputes
•    irrational and/or inappropriate behavior from persons with mental disorders
•    irrational and/or inappropriate behavior from an impaired executive or officer
•    bullying and intimidation
•    discrimination claims on the basis of ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, dress, etc.
•    suicides

It is a fact of the workplace that one must deal with people face-to-face at some point, whether those people are coworkers, customers or other members of the general public. This can be anyone from a retail store employee and customer, both equally at wit's end from a busy and stressful holiday season, to educational institute staff and students, many of whom may not get along civilly for one reason or another. It can be especially useful for those who must work in customer service-based industries or positions despite social anxiety disorders, making the work day more manageable, if not tolerable. Violence in the workplace training is essential to managing the work environment so it remains a safe one for all who take part in it.

Consider all these situations when you consider violence in the workplace training and its applications thereof. It is far better to be proactive than reactive and deal with troubling circumstances before they become full-blown, widespread problems. You simply never know who may snap or when.
