Water Coolers
The ubiquitous water cooler….where staff secretly sneak away from their desks to trade gossip on the pretense of getting a glass of water! Increasingly popular, water coolers have become a standard feature in many offices and homes. From its humble, yet vital beginnings, water has evolved into a sophisticated beverage. But, do you really know what is in that bottled water you are drinking?
While the sale of bottled water is regarded by many as a hoax perpetrated by unscrupulous businesses against unwary consumers, its popularity has grown exponentially. Water coolers initially were a popular choice in providing fresh drinking water to locations without plumbing. In recent years however, global sales of bottled water have risen dramatically around the world as a growing number of employers and consumers embrace trends to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Critics denounce water coolers, expounding on the negative impact to the environment and citing the large carbon footprint left by the production, manufacturing and packaging costs of producing the plastic containers. Indeed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to be "green" about "blue". They also cite that the water provided from coolers is no better than that flowing from local taps. It is an undisputed fact that water obtained locally from municipal sources, may be further treated with chemicals and enzymes and sold as bottled water, however the standards for tap water and bottled water are very similar and when it comes to convenience, nothing tops cups of instantly chilled water from water coolers.
There are a number of varieties of bottled water available for consumption, differing in the methods that they are treated. The treatment process is designed to inhibit bacterial growth, lower the mineral content, and remove undesirable chemicals such as chlorine. Tap water is simply water that has been treated with chemicals and enzymes and then filtered. Chlorine added to water to purify it kills bacteria, but can add an unpleasant taste. The use of ozone is a very effective method of removing chlorine from water and eliminating unpleasant odors and undesirable flavors, as well as removing harmful bacteria. Filtration systems, boiling with ultraviolet rays and reverse osmosis are other methods of treating water. Boiling water renders water sterile, but adversely affects taste and renders it unpalatable. Distillation reduces dissolved mineral content in bottled water; however, it is perceived by many to be flat and tasteless.
While water is treated to remove contaminants, it is not usually sterilized as sterilized water is typically reserved for medical applications. The addition of carbon dioxide to bottled water creates effervescence, commonly known as "carbonation".
Water cooler bottles must be appropriately labeled to identify the source of the water and geographic origin. Mineral water originates from underground reservoirs known as aquifers. It contains more dissolved minerals essential for life than spring water. Spring water, obtained from springs, is completely free of chemicals, affording it great taste. It is frequently treated and disinfected by a process known as reverse osmosis, abbreviated simply as R.O. Bottled water not specifically labeled as mineral or spring water may actually originate from any source, even a local water supply.
If you are concerned about the quality of your drinking water, inquire as to existing regulations and guidelines. While we frequently take our water for granted, we should remember that in many countries, water is a precious commodity. Even today, many locales do not have access to fresh, potable water directly from their taps, necessitating drinking chlorinated water or buying purified, bottled water for use in water coolers. When travelling, if you are uncertain of the quality of local water, or if it has been treated, disinfected or carbonated, it is recommended to drink bottled water.
