Shopping for the perfect pair of men’s jeans?

A man’s jeans have long been his ultimate wardrobe staple, but these days, with so many different styles to choose from, shopping for the perfect pair can seem just as daunting as doing so for the female equivalent.

With such an overwhelming choice of styles and washes to choose from, knowing which style suits your body shape and lifestyle can help make the retail task that little bit easier.

The two basic denims that jeans are typically made of are washed and raw. Washed denim means the jeans have been washed after production and any ‘loose’ dye has been rinsed out. The raw denim is darker as it has not been washed after production. They will fade naturally and distress in accordance with the wearer’s body.

Washed denim comes in many different types. Stonewash is a classic look with a distinctive light blue colour, very casual cool. Vintage wash is distressed in such a way to give jeans the well worn ‘my favourite pair of jeans’ look. Acid wash was huge in the 80’s and is experiencing a major comeback (much to the dismay of some). The jeans are bashed through a chemical process stripping them of most of their colour, leaving marbled navy blue streaks on a white background. Dirty wash appears just as it sounds, dirty. The jeans have a slight yellow or brown tint added to the mix to give a used look.

When it comes to the style of mens jeans, it’s important to get a pair that suits your body shape, for both comfort and looks. A pair of ill-fitting jeans can be very noticeable and scream bad fashion. Many manufacturers add to the already confusing mix by creating their own jean-style jargon, but here are the most popular styles that you should find in most clothing stores.

Bootcut jeans are fashionable, yet not outrageous. A slim cut with a slight flare at the ankle, they balance the body well and suit most body shapes. Relaxed jeans are just that: relaxed. They are looser from waist to feet, perfect for heavier guys as they wont emphasize curves as snugger cuts would. Thin guys should pass up this style, as it can look too baggy. The trendy skinny cut should strictly be the domain of skinny guys. A look often associated with rock stars, it’s designed to hug the legs and accentuate a thin body. The tight legs make average-to-heavy men look bigger than they are, not to mention, the fact that they’ll be incredibly uncomfortable. If you don’t make the cut, body-shape wise for skinny jeans, slim fit may be a possibility. Slim fit is a less extreme version of skinny, with slightly more room around the leg and similar tapering. Another style is the straight cut. This is a simple, conservative style that sits somewhere in the middle, neither tapered nor very loose and should suits most body types.

Shopping for the perfect pair of jeans is all about trial and error, but if you head into battle with an idea of what will work for you, you can be confident of making a fashion conscious decision which will continue the ruling of this trusty wardrobe staple.
