Old Gruen Watches - Collectible Pieces which will Appreciate in Value

Dietrich Gruen was a German Watchmaker whom went to American in 1867. He was the person who create Gruen Watches. His son Fred in the future carried on manufacturing the watches. Earliest Gruen Timepieces included Gruen Pocket Watches and Gruen Wristwatches for men and women.

Gruen pocket watches were known for their elegant design and thin frame, which were marketed as VeriThin. The family who owned it, shut down Gruen in 1953; however, Gruen watches were produced in Switzerland until 1976. The brand Gruen is today licensed to MZ Berger, which continues on making replicas of the original watches.

Gruen wrist-watches, that have been produced before 1976 are collectible pieces, and the watches, which were made prior to World War II, are especially prized collections. To see if a Gruen Pocket Watch is genuine or not, you'll need to look at several parts of the watch.

All Gruen Pocket Watches and Wristwatches have the name "Gruen" on the face, just below the 12 at the top. Watches which were made after 1953, have Swiss under Gruen on the face. Watches that do not have Gruen written on the dial or have erroneous Gruen punctuation are not genuine.

On the back of a Gruen watch, the word "Gruen" is written and sometimes the style name is also written, such as SemiThin or VeriThin.

You might take your watch to a jeweler and get him to open the case. Every genuine Gruen Timepieces have serial number placed inside. The serial numbers indicate the year of make. Any person can use a Gruen Time data table and match the serial number to obtain the year the watch was built. The number of the case can be many of the time different from the number of the works and the number on the case cannot be used to check the manufacturing year of the watch.

One of the most popular Gruen Pocket Watches is the Square Carr. The Carr means square, it is French. The Square Carr was released in 1931. It is a square shaped pocket watch. The 12, 3, 6 and 9 numbers were arranged within the 4 corners giving it the form of a diamond.

The watch was offered as a men's pocket watch and a women's purse watch as well as a portable table clock. The production of Carr was terminated in 1934 and these days that pocket watch price ranges almost $1500-$1600. Air flight jump hour is another very popular Gruen watch, which was produced post World War II.

The reproduction of the Square Carr costs much less. Currently there is a company that produces the reproductions but they have no connection to Gruen of Gruen watches co.
