LED Navigation Lights To Help The Marine

With the emergence of LED, the lighting system of the world has found new dimensions. At the beginning, the LEDs were costly and thus not affordable to be used for large scale purposes, but nowadays the cost of LED has reduced by a great extent and thus LED finds its use in many spheres such as marine LED navigation lights.

LED; light-emitting-diode as suggested by the name itself is a diode device that emits light in the visible spectrum so that the light emitted by the diode can be seen. The LED conducts electricity when the polarity of the voltage is in the right direction and is totally off when the polarity is opposite. But applying the voltage of the wrong polarity is likely to cause damage to the LED so it is particularly important to apply the right polar voltage to it.

One of the main advantages of LED is that is never fuses like ordinary bulbs and if carefully used following the procedure, it can give prolonged use without showing any depreciation in performance. Apart from the durability, the LED finds its use extensively in the navigation systems for the reason of higher efficiency over the regular iridescent lamps and the LEDs reduce energy consumption this making it more and more convenient for power saving techniques as the navigation lights contribute to much electrical consumption worldwide. Some of the other advantages of these lamps over regular iridescent lamps are LEDs are more resistant to shocks and vibrations and they can be powered easily by battery systems or the power grid of the vessels without reduction of performance.

Even though LEDs have many advantages, some of the disadvantages are also very inconvenient to the navigations systems. LEDs being diodes, even the white light emitting diode is comprised of fewer colors than the regular spectrum of white light and thus making the these lights go through a color filter causes the filter to absorb most of the colors and the remaining color from the LED dims to a great extent sometimes making it indistinguishable by naked eye. This is not the case for iridescent lights which are more convenient to be used with color filters. But the dimming of LEDs might very well be overcome by using specific color emitting LEDs as required. Some of the precautions that must be taken for LED navigation lights are: the enclosures must be capable to resist the harsh sprays, splashes and submersions caused in marine applications.
