If your tools are important enough to you to rate a sizable investment, then it stands to reason that they should be important enough to be cared for and properly maintained.

 Take time to read and thoroughly acquaint yourself with the Instruction Manual that came with your power tool. Some tools may require special maintenance and you can’t provide it if you don’t know about it.

 Keep your power tools dry! As a general rule, power tools were not designed to be in damp, wet conditions as parts may rust both inside and out.

 Keep your power tools clean, both internally and externally. A build-up of dust and debris inside the tool’s motor housing, for instance, is a very common reason for malfunction. If there is a build-up of dust, dirt or debris on the blade of a power tool, use alcohol to clean it well before putting it away, and wipe it down as well to make sure it is dry.

 If you have power tools that are powered by petrol, such as chain saws or brush cutters, it is vitally important to run these tools occasionally so that stagnant fuel doesn’t block the engine. If this isn’t possible, you should drain the fuel tank. To do this, simply run the engine until it quits. Even then, there will still be some petrol left in the fuel line, so when the tool stops; let it rest for a few minutes then prime it and start it again, letting it run until it stops once more.

 The solid blocks of carbon graphite, or brushes, that conduct electricity to the motor are often the first things to wear out in power tools. Over time, friction will result in these brushes wearing down and eventually the motor will lose power and shut down as a result. You can easily replace these brushes, following the directions in your instruction or user manual that came with the tool. If you see little sparks flying from the motor housing of the tool while it is running, you will know it is time to replace the brushes. Even if you don’t want to replace the brushes yourself and decide to take the power tool to a professional to do this chore, if you see signs that the brushes need replacing----make sure it gets done.
