Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras and Fine Art Photography

With the advance of digital cameras, including cell phone cameras, many people have become interested in photography. Digital cameras pictures can easily be transferred onto a computer hard drive, flash drive, put onto a compact disc, or printed onto photo paper. When it comes to fine art photography you need to purchase the best camera you possibly can.

Many are familiar with compact digital cameras, which are small, lightweight and easy to carry. A compact digital camera is a great choice for basic photography needs. However for those who want to get into fine art photography as a profession or serious hobby, a digital single lens reflex (or DSLR for short) may be the way to go. DSLR cameras are more expensive than compact digital cameras, but DSLR cameras offer a wide variety of options for those who know, or want to learn photography techniques. DSLR cameras capture almost 100% of what the camera lens views, whereas the image on a compact digital cameras view finder is far from accurate. This makes a DLSR camera perfect for fine art photography, because it allows the photographer to take very detailed photographs.

Despite the advances made with compact cameras they only have an electronic shutter. This often means there’s a delay between the shutter button (the button pressed to take a picture) and the shutter opening. A DSLR camera has a manual shutter which opens instantaneously when you take a photograph. A DSLR camera operates much faster than a compact camera. This makes a DSLR camera a great fine art photography camera to use in cases where there is a lot of movement.

Digital compact cameras often come with different camera settings, like changing the color tone to sepia, or settings to take pictures in different environments, such as at night. DLSR cameras offer more manual settings. For people new to photography this means becoming familiar with which shutter speed and ISO (a number which indicates the sensitivity of the image sensor) to use in particular settings. Learning about ISO and other manual settings can help when using a DSLR camera for fine art photography.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of DSLR cameras is the ability to purchase additional lenses for the camera. One of the most basic lenses purchases it the zoom lens. This allows the camera to focus in on a subject in great detail. While compact digital cameras may have a zoom it will not be able to zoom in as far, or with as much detail as a DSLR camera. Other DSLR lenses that are popular with fine art photography include; a wide angle lens, a macro lens and a portrait lens.

When it comes to photography, digital cameras have made it possible for everyone to take photographs. Compact digital cameras are small, easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. However; for people looking to get into fine art photography, whether as a personal hobby or as a career, a DSLR is a much better camera choice. While it may be more expensive than a compact digital camera, a DSLR camera offers more options and manual settings which can help take the best photographs possible.
