Tanning Safety Tips

Caucasian or Asian, there are times when we want to have a tanned look. A tanned look can be a fashion statement for some. For others, it is the look of health. And for others, tanned skin gives an impression of beauty. Whatever the reasons for getting it, tanning is here to stay. However, since it involves the largest part of our body, the skin, we should take precautionary or safety measures when doing it. If we're going for the traditional tanning method, we're going to have to expose our skin directly to the sun's ultraviolet rays which can have a burning, sometimes cancerous, effect when done excessively.

There are, however, practical safety measures when tanning so we can truly enjoy a day out in the beach. We start with a good sunscreen product which blocks both UVA and UVB. Some sunscreens protect you only against UVA but since the sun also emits UVB rays, it is best to have sunscreen that protects against both.

A waterproof sunscreen which is ideal for children who have sensitive skin. A sunscreen product that has PABA or titanium oxide is ideal for those who have allergies. The SPF number is something that you should be looking into the sunscreen product. The higher the number, the longer you can stay under the sun. without getting your self burned.

The SPF number that you need depends on your skin type. For children 6 months and above, SPF 15 is needed and an SPF of 20-30 is ideal for those who have very fair skin. SPF 12-20 is ideal for those who have moderately fair skinned. Put a liberal amount to your sin and apply it regularly. Though you are protected, don't expose yourself under the sun around 10AM to 4PM because these are the times where in the suns rays are the strongest.

Wear sunglasses while tanning to protect the lens of your eyes from heat. Don't forget this as this is crucial especially if you want to take a bath after. Do not apply any lotion or any other products on your skin except for your sunscreen since some of these creams can have an adverse effect when exposed to the sun. Drink lots of liquids before and after you expose yourself under the sun. You need replenishment since the heat can evaporate an intense amount of moisture.
