How To Make Your Flower Arrangement Last Longer
Regardless of where you live in the country, receiving flowers is always a great moment. Even if you're getting flowers for your birthday, anniversary, as a Christmas present, or Valentine's Day, getting flowers always brings a smile to your face. And regardless of why you got flowers, you want to keep that flower arrangement as beautiful as possible for as long as possible.
There are lots of ways to ensure that you get as much longevity out of flowers as possible. One way to make sure your gift is going to be long lasting is to give a potted flower as opposed to a cut one. That way, the flower or plant will last as long as the person is capable of caring for them. Even though there are those of us out there who don't have a green thumb at all, a potted plant is still easy to care for. And even the at of caring for it will remind us of who sent it, and why, making that smile repeat over and over again.
Cut flowers however are a different story. They have been cut away from their root system and no longer have a way to directly get nutrients from soil. However, that doesn't mean they can't last a long time as well. One of the keys to getting cut flowers to last longer is to give them some of the nutrients they would be getting if they were still planted. That's easy to do because the main nutrient cut flowers need is sugar based. That's why people tell you to put the flowers in a vase filled with Sprite or 7-UP instead of plain water. Water is fine if the plants are still in dirt and can get what they need from the nitrogen and other nutrients in the dirt. However, cut plants can't convert nitrogen and other nutrients into sugars any longer, so to keep them fresher longer, you have to supply the sugars directly.
While there is no way to make a cut flower last indefinitely unless you dry the flower and use it in a picture or some other ornamental fashion, you can keep it alive for days, even weeks past it's cut date. Keep in mind what part of the country you live in and in drier, less humid places like Austin, Texas, make sure you change out the fluid daily. Even if you live near an ocean environment like Long Beach, changing out the 7-UP can make the flowers last a lot longer.
