Fertility Problems and Treatment Options

Fertility problems are affecting many thousands of women and men countrywide. The reasons why couples have difficulties conceiving a child can be manifold and sometimes go many years back. Modern medicine can help to find the causes for undesired infertility and when the cause is known, a specific treatment can be started. Without knowing the cause of the fertility problem, on the other hand, it is nearly impossible to treat this condition successfully. Known conditions, that affect human fertility, are certain types of kidney diseases (in both partners), Mumps complications like Orchitis (men only), ovarian cysts and endometriosis (women only).

Other factors that can greatly affect the ability of having healthy children are substance abuse, including smoking and alcohol, obesity and age. Generally speaking the ability to father or conceive a child decreases as the age of the prospective parents increases. This is particularly true for women, as their ability to become pregnant decreases rapidly after the age of 40 and diminishes completely when they have reached menopause. Men, on the other hand, can father a child until a high age, but also their ability to do so is higher in younger years.

If the underlying cause is found, treatment options become available. These can be as simple as to recommend certain days of the female cycle for intercourse or as complicated, and expensive, as in vitro fertilization. A doctor that is experienced in this field will always start with the simplest treatment possible, to avoid complications. For example, in vitro fertilization, and the hormone treatment that accompanies it, leads often to pregnancies that involve several fetuses.

These kind of pregnancies can pose a risk to the mother, as well as to the children in her womb. Therefor in vitro fertilization is seen by many as the last method that should be tried. Treating the underlying conditions, making changes towards a healthier lifestyle and loosing weight in case of obesity, are simpler and safer measures to treat fertility problems.
