Repetitive Strain injuries Benefit from Chiropractic Care,Asheville, NC Chiropractor
After a long day at work, perhaps you have experienced an unexpected tightness between your shoulders. Or, a restful night of sleep turns into a restless day after, what seemed like a comfortable pillow, results in a stiff neck.
RSI, or Repetitive Strain Injuries, are a result of repeated stresses on the muscles and tendons of the neck, back, hands and arms and are common among individuals who spend a lot of time seated. With more computers in the workplace and the home, many of us now suffer from RSI. Pain is caused by swelling of the joints — often seen in computer users as numbness, tingling sensations that begin in the hand and work their way to the neck and shoulders, and even pain in the forearm, hand, or wrist.
The best strategy is prevention, and anyone who suffers from any of the above symptoms should seek the attention of an RSI specialist, such as a chiropractor.
Asheville, NC Chiropractor Addresses RSI
Asheville, NC chiropractor, Dr. David Nygaard, of Atlas Family Chiropractic, often sees patients who initially ignore minor discomforts that develop into significant pain or stiffness that does not go away, even with rest.
"Neck and lower back pain can be debilitating. Chiropractic care including spinal decompression therapy is a new, non-invasive and drug-free alternative," Dr. Nygaard advises.
Our nervous system allows us to be self-healing organisms, which is the key to chiropractic care. As information flows down the spinal cord from our brain to our organs and tissues, signals are sent back to our brain confirming that our body is working correctly. Improper motion, stress to joints, or irregular body positions can interrupt this vital information exchange, and the function of organs and tissues are compromised.
Even if we eliminate the stress causing our aches and pains, the damage has occurred and may not go away on its own. Chiropractic care can be beneficial in both preventing injury and in improving nervous system control of the body through spinal adjustments.
"Lingering aches and pains aren't something you ‘just have to live with.' They may be signs of more serious, underlying issues. Proper chiropractic care often can provide relief for pain while alleviating its source," Dr. Nygaard notes.
Assess Your Work and Sleep Areas
It's also a good idea to make changes in how you work at your desk.
"Practice proper ergonomics by making simple adjustments, such as altering the angle of your computer monitor, adjusting the height of the seat of your chair, sitting all the way back on any seat, and keeping the items that you use regularly close to you so that you are not reaching unnecessarily for them. Use a headset rather than cradling the telephone between your head and shoulder," Dr. Nygaard says.
Repetitive motions, postural distortions, or a lack of daily restorative sleep can cause physical stress. Falling asleep with your neck or torso twisted can be as painful as an acute injury.
"In our Asheville chiropractic clinic, we advise clients how sleeping ergonomically alleviates nerve compression and stress to the vertebrae. A pillow that properly supports the neck is important to avoid injury. We also discuss the best sleeping positions to reduce stress to the back and neck," adds Dr. Nygaard.
Chiropractic's goal is to achieve optimal health by properly diagnosing the problem, treating the cause and providing lasting pain relief with minimal patient risk.
"Finding the cause of the problem and providing temporary relief to pain is an important step. In chiropractic care we go a step further by ameliorating the pain and the functionality of impairments," Dr. Nygaard says.
