Dentophobia: The Fear of Dentists

Fear is a negative emotion regarding a particular scenario. The object of one’s fear, usually called a threat, affects one’s fight-or-flee response. Some of the most common fears are the fear of flying (aerophobia), fear of heights (acrophobia), fear of spiders (arachnophobia), and the fear of public speaking (glossophobia).

A fear can be caused by not knowing exactly what the threat is capable of doing. Sometimes it can also be caused by associating the fear with something that is generalized by the public. An example is the fear of heights, wherein a person may actually get this phobia simply by watching what is on the news. Most of the time, fear is also developed because of a past incident that reminds the person to stay away from the threat.

Dentophobia, or fear of the dentists, is one of the most popular fears in the list. Regardless of the severity, studies show that over 75% of people fear the dentist. The media doesn’t help in giving the dentists a good image because movies like “The Dentist” portray dentists in a negative way, as portrayed in a scene where the dentist is shown accidentally stabbing a patient’s gums.

Las Vegas dentist contrasts this belief, as they are some of the most patient and professional people campaigning for oral health care. These dentists, regardless of media’s negative imaging, are very respectable characters who hold their profession with high regard. People rarely understand how difficult a dentist’s work can be.

To succeed in Las Vegas dentistry, one should be very patient. Going through procedures with a patient’s mouth requires steady hands and keen eyes. Unlike other surgeons, dentists usually have to go through multiple operations in a day, given the area they are operating on. While people might not get to see andrologists (doctors specializing in the reproductive system) in their lifetime, they are always bound to see dentists.

Before you listen to anything negative about a Las Vegas dentist, try to gain knowledge about their job, the dedication it requires and the passion that they have to service you. After all, what they do isn’t for their personal gain, but it is to help you get better.
