Rafa Nadal Wins Wimbledon - Again
One of the top sporting events of the year, Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, and the only one played on grass. The others are the Australian Open, the French Open, and the U.S Open.
Rafael Nadal now has eight Grand Slam titles to his credit. These include one Australian Open victory, five French Open victories, and the two Wimbledon victories. He has yet to capture top spot in the U.S Open.
Nadal made his way to the Wimbledon final by dispatching Scotland's Andy Murray in the semi-final on Friday, July 2, 2010. Nadal won that match 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
This was significant for Nadal who missed last year's Wimbledon tournament due to injury. He was recovering at the time from tendonitis in both knees. Berdych made it into the final via wins over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
The match featured Nadal playing a controlled game where he never lost serve. He went about his business in a systematic workmanlike fashion. He weathered an initial first-set rally robustness by Tomas Berdych.
In fact, the second set saw Nadal a touch jittery at the beginning. Berdych fought hard but he just couldn't take advantage of three break point opportunities.
Subsequently, Nadal settled into a rhythm that took him through the rest of the final. His strength saw him hold serve. Berdych did have some opportunities to break his serve in the second and third sets, but again couldn't capitalize because of Nadal's power.
Nadal began to serve in the second set and Berdych had his first break chance of the final. Nadal saved it with a forehand winner.
Then Berdych had another chance to take Nadal's serve. However, Nadal saved it with a service winner. In the end, Nadal won the Wimbledon Men's Tennis Final 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
It was a successful Wimbledon for Tomas Berdych, though. He is a tennis player with a powerful stroke and his placing on Sunday now sees him move into eighth spot in the ATP rankings. This is his highest ranking so far.
Nadal has ranking as Number 1 in the world. Serbia's Novak Djokovic is ranked second. Roger Federer of Switzerland is ranked third.
On the Saturday, Serena Williams defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 to win the Women's final. This is her fourth Wimbledon victory.
With this win, Williams moves past Billie Jean King on the list of Total Grand Slam Titles (Women's). She now has 13 Grand Slam titles, while King has 12. The overall leader of all time is Margaret Court with 24.
Rafael Nadal, age 24, now sits in sixth spot, tied with others, for Total Grand Slam Titles (Men's). His eight has him closing ground on the overall leader Roger Federer who has sixteen. If he can stay healthy, Nadal certainly has the chance to build on this total.
Roger Federer garnered eight Grand Slam victories by age 25. Nadal has eight before his 25th birthday. His birth date is June 3, 1986.
For now, its home to Majorca (Mallorca) for the Spanish tennis star. There, he will rest and prepare for future tennis matches. He was born in Manacor, Mallorca, Spain, and resides there as well.
He boosts the island's tourism industry in the same way rival Roger Federer is a boost for Swiss ski holidays at winter time.
The largest island of Spain, Majorca (Mallorca) is in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. It is one of the autonomous communities of Spain. Palma is the island's capital, and is a bustling city that hosts an abundance of tourists each year.
Located off the coast of mainland Spain, Majorca features a pleasant climate from May to October. It offers its visitors fine beaches, a verdant interior landscape, local traditions and historic architecture.
A range of mountains makes its way through the island. Many of the beaches in Majorca are in the towns and in central urban areas. They are also in semi-urban zones.
Definitely, the island is a place for world-class tennis star Nadal to unwind. There, he can touch base with family and friends who support him.
No doubt he will have this year's U.S. Open on his mind, as he rests in Majorca. This Grand Slam title that has eluded him takes place from August 30 to September 12, 2010.
It takes place in Queens' New York City. While savoring his Wimbledon victory, Nadal and the rest of the tennis fraternity are planning their strategies for this significant Grand Slam event in a couple of months time.
