Getting to Know Your Wine

If you're a wine lover, you probably know everything there is to know about this drink. Those who just are mystified by it would probably appreciate knowing more, starting with the two types there are, namely, red wine and white wine.

Red Wine

Syrah or Shiraz is a type of grape that is used to make a certain kind of red wine. This can be used as varietal or can be blended. This has been reported to be one of the worlds most popular grape. Syrah grapes are mostly grown in California, Australia, and France's Rhone Valley and are great to pair with steaks and stews.

Merlot - Merlot is yet another type of grape that is used to make wines either by blending it or as a varietal wine. In the wine market, this is one of the most popular varietal types and considered the 3rd most grown grape variety around the world. Wines made from merlot are often regarded as beginners' wine and are great to pair with any kind of food. Merlot wines are also known to be less tannic or rough compared to those of Cabernet Sauvignon.

White Wine

Chardonnay, regarded to be the queen of white wine grapes is very versatile. In comparison to other types of wines, this can produce a more complex type of wine.

Another type is called Chenin Blanc which is recognized to be the oldest types of grapes. These types are usually grown over the area of Loire Valley in France. However, today, this type is popularly grown in areas of California where it is mostly used in jug wines or sometimes in inexpensive table wines. Chenin Blanc is light and fruity on the taste buds in general.

Sauvignon Blanc or Fume Blanc - This is mostly grown around the areas of Loire and Bordeaux regions in France and also in California, New Zealand and even in some parts in South Africa. It is very well-known for its light and crisp, acidic taste. It normally has an herbal character, smelling like bell pepper or a newly mown grass. It is best served with a mixture of Semillion from France.

Those are some of the most famous types of wine. There are still a number of varieties available out there and each of them has distinct characteristics. You can give wine as a present to your loved ones, co-workers or to your friends. To make your gifts of wine even warmer or more personal, go for customized wine labels to make more lasting memories of your gift-giving.
