Movies to get you in the mood for your New York trip

So, you've booked your flights and accommodation, bought some US currency and finalised your holiday insurance - what's left to do? Well, all the important stuff is out of the way, so why not kick back, relax and watch some New York-based movies to get you in the mood for your holiday?

Manhattan

This 1979 classic directed by and starring Woody Allen was shot entirely in black and white, capturing some truly iconic views of Manhattan - the opening montage in particular sets the scene and is sure to bring any New York fans out in goosebumps. Other highlights include a carriage ride through Central Park and a truly stunning shot of the Queensboro Bridge, which spans the East River, connecting Manhattan and Long Island City in Queens.

King Kong

The timeless tale of King Kong, first told in 1933 with the original movie culminates in a memorable scene where the giant gorilla-like creature scales the Empire State Building in an attempt to flee his captors. While the Empire State Building may be seen as too ‘touristy' a place to visit, those people are missing out on spectacular views of New York City. Make sure it's on your ‘to do' list.

Wall Street

This gritty drama starring Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen and Darryl Hannah is set in and around New York's financial district, home to the New York Stock Exchange. Landmark buildings in the area include Federal Hall, the Trump Building and the Bankers Trust Company Building. Well worth a visit for anybody with an interest in architecture.

When Harry Met Sally

While this romantic comedy starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan takes in a fair chunk of New York, its most memorable scene was filmed in Katz's Delicatessen at 205 E. Houston Street in Manhattan, which is a must visit for hungry travellers. The deli was also featured in the Johnny Depp and Al Pacino film Donnie Brasco

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

Based on the novel of the same name, this tough heist drama was first filmed in 1974 and spawned a remake in 2009 - although the original, starring Walter Matthau, is by far the better film. While watching a film featuring passengers taken hostage on an underground train may not seem like the best preparation for a trip to New York, the fact is that the city's subway system is one of its most famous features.
