New Australian Migration Model to Attract Skilled Workers

Peter Speldewinde, Assisstant secretary of Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has recently made an announcement on a new immigration program called "Electronic Expression of Interest" (EOI) in efforts to attract more skilled workers from Indian and other countries.

According to Speldewinde, under the new immigration model, prospective migrants will now have to submit an Electronic Expression of Interest based on which they would be invited by the DIAC to complete a visa application.

The EOI is an online process for skilled workers who want to immigrate to Australia. Applicants will be required to provide basic biographical and other information such as occupation, their work experiences and English level while filling the online form.

If the DIAC finds that prospective applicants have enough skills and qualifications required for the Australian labour market, it would invite those skilled migrants to make Australian visa applications.

Currently, applicants under independent, family or state sponsored immigration also need an invitation from the DIAC to file visa applications.

"The EOIs will be held on a register and people on that register will be ranked according to what point they score. Australian government would periodically issue advertisement about the job offers and those with high scores on the points test would be invited," said Mr Speldewinde.

The new immigration model is expected to filter applicants who can meet the needs of Australian skilled workforce. The processing time will also be reduced and the movement of skilled workers down to Southern Australia will be speeded up thanks to this model.

"The target groups are engineering, medical profession, nursing, scientist etc," Mr Speldewinde added.
