Why Hong Kong will play a larger role in World Affairs in the future

Hong Kong is known for many things. The city is one of the leading global business hubs; it has the freest economy in the world and is considered as one of the best places on earth to do business. Of course Hong Kong is quite popular amongst leisure travelers as well with hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting the city every year. While Hong Kong’s attractiveness as a business destination was always known, what a lot of analysts have started to believe is that Hong Kong would start playing a much larger role in world affairs in the future. It won’t be just a destination to start a business and take advantage of the pro-business policies.

Obviously one of the key reasons why Hong Kong’s stature in world affairs will rise is thanks to the incredible rise in the Chinese economy. China is not only expected to surpass the United States as the largest economy in the world, currently China is a genuine superpower and starting to dominate world affairs. There is a clear shift from doing business in the west to doing business in China. Everyone wants to enter the Chinese market and invest in the country. Hong Kong is currently popular for being the gateway to China. Chinese authorities themselves know about Hong Kong’s popularity and its stature as a global business hub. Being one of the leading financial centers of the world, Hong Kong is also in a position to plan any important role for developing the Chinese economy and being a testing ground for the Chinese Yuan. It is clear that administration in China will use Hong Kong more aggressively in the future and would plan on converting the city to rival or surpass the importance of even New York or London.

Apart from the obvious Chinese angle, Hong Kong itself is more than capable of playing a larger role in world affairs. Thanks to the ongoing economic recession in the west and continued debt crisis in Europe, there is a lot more focus on Hong Kong at the moment. The city has a vibrant economy and its pragmatic approach to its economy and business environment has come into the attention of some of the biggest companies in the world. It is expected that several large multinational companies would consider shifting their global headquarters itself to Hong Kong. With growth slowing down completely in many parts of the west, companies are looking for better pastures and places where there are a number of advantages and incentives for them. With Hong Kong’s pro-business policies and an extremely liberal taxation system, it would not be surprising if several large companies from all corners of the global decided to relocate to the city.
