The Pay Per Click Advertising Model

Pay per Click (PPC) is a model of advertising and marketing that uses ads on various websites on the internet. When an ad is clicked, the people advertising will pay the site hosting their ad whenever it is clicked; this is usually at a fixed rate, depending on a particular site or ad size.

PPC is designed not to just try to have their ads everywhere, including sites that have nothing to do with their product or business; instead, PPC is designed to have a chance to advertise to target viewers of topics that are relevant to the ads. In a very real sense, the ad comes to you, the consumer; whenever you go to a site dealing in a certain topic, there will be relevant ads there waiting for you. That is what PPC is all about.

Because there is only a limited amount of space on a search engine's first page, sometimes you will have to bid for a particular keyword or key phrase with other advertisers that want that same word or phrase. How much you pay will just depend on how much that particular word or phrase is wanted and how much others will pay to have it.

The host site, on which the ad will be posted for the consumer to view, is called a sponsor, host or affiliate. Most search engines have the same type of rules when it comes to these sites. Basically, if a particular host does not generate money for the owner of the ad, then the owner will not have to pay. There are a lot of variations on this but generally, they all have that basic principal idea behind them. The ads, themselves, are usually called sponsor links, host links, affiliate links or sponsor ads, host ads or affiliate ads.
