EMR vs. EHR- The difference between Electronic Medical Records and Electronic Health Records

EMR and EHR are two terms that are often used interchangeably within the electronic records industry. While electronic medical records and electronic health records are similar, they do have some differences that need to be understood. This article will discuss the primary differences between electronic health records and electronic medical records. Knowing this difference will ensure that a company or organization purchases the correct software to fit their needs.

The confusion stems from some (not all) EMR and EHR providers who do not make the distinction between the two when explaining them. When companies selling EMR and EHR products do not advocate the correct usage, it becomes difficult for doctors to identify the correct terminology and choose the right software. This is the root of the confusion.
While in some cases the terms can be used interchangeably with minimal impact on the meaning of a particular thought or phrase, a difference does exist. It exists specifically when discussing how particular electronic data is going to be used and processed. An electronic health record and an electronic medical record become distinguishable based on who will have access to the information.
At its core, EMR (electronic medical records) consist of patient records that are electronically collected, monitored, and maintained within a single medical office or organization. In simple terms an electronic medical record is something that only one doctor or practice is going to see, and this record is generally less comprehensive. In some cases it may be used by a specialist as opposed to a general practitioner.
On the other end of the spectrum EHR (electronic health records) are created when a record exists that is accessible by a variety of doctors, medical offices, etc. An electronic health record is generally more comprehensive, and may include a variety of health related information from numerous medical professionals.
While the two terms are often used interchangeably, it is important for any doctor or medical professional to discuss his or her options with a professional in the field of EMR/EHR technology in order to purchase the correct software.
