With the last review in our seven part IWC Vintage Collection series being a little bit of a let down, we’re hoping that this, the third instalment, will make up for it today. Replica Watches It seems IWC have set themselves a very high standard with this collection, so much so that even the finest luxury watches can appear mediocre, especially when compared with the Hand Wound Pilot from our first review in the series, which was exceptional. Today’s watch review showcases the IWC Men’s Ingenieur Automatic Watch. Right off the bat, it has the same black alligator strap as the Portuguese Hand Wound which we previously decried. However, this luxury watch is different in that it has a much brighter face, with [slightly] less of an emphasis on symmetry and smoothness, meaning that the alligator band suits it better (though we’re still not number one fans of it or anything near). You may have noted that the two previous IWC luxury watches we reviewed were hand wound – this one leaps into the modern era with a Pellaton automatic winding movement, high-precision 80111 calibre and integrated shock absorber. However that still makes it much cheaper than the earlier members of the collection, reviewed here at The Watch Scene over the past week or so. The 8521 calibre in the first Ingenieur was a byword for ruggedness and reliability. Apparently it “created a furore among watch lovers.” The 80000-calibre family with Pellaton winding and integrated shock-absorption system is its natural development, say IWC. There you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth! But seriously, this watch is definitely a step up from number two in the series – the Portuguese Hand Wound – in our opinion. After a semi-extended hiatus, we are finally getting back to our IWC Vintage Collection series of watch reviews today. We’ve already covered the first three watches in this seven-strong collection, so now it’s time for number four – the IWC Aquatimer Automatic Mens Watch. Rolex DateJust Replica Now this is our kind of watch. Sexy, salubrious and sleek, we had barely set eyes on it before deciding this is by far the best looking watch in the Vintage Collection so far. The IWC hand Wound Pilot is currently in the lead with 4.5/5, so could this go on to be only our second ever perfect scoring watch review. Let’s find out, shall we? IWC say that this timepiece combines luxury with precision – a combination we are certainly fond of when it comes to the composition of luxury watches. While these IWC watch reviews have been a pleasure to work on, we have found the Pilot has been the only other watch in the collection so far to have matched up to this criteria. Like the rest of the Vintage Collection timepieces, the Aquatimer is part of a limited production run comprised of just 500 individual models. Thus a new one is going to set you back around $24,000. However there seems to be some used examples selling around the 5k mark, but we’re not sure if they are technically part of the Vintage Collection – they are most likely non-platinum imitation models manufactured to meet demand. Rolex Milgauss Replica As with all of the luxury watches in this historic grouping, there is a near-epic scale back-story to accompany the IWC Aquatimer. The clear-cut dial design of the Aquatimer Automatic mirrors that of the first Aquatimer series except that the 44-millimetre case makes it even more legible. The Aquatimer Automatic is, of course, ideally suited to the needs of ambitious divers. The watch features a screw-in main crown together with a crown for setting the internal rotating bezel. To facilitate use, this second crown does not screw in. Like the 1967 model, which featured the 8541-calibre automatic movement – then the most rugged available – the Aquatimer Automatic of today has the same movement as the Ingenieur watch family: the IWC-manufactured 80111 calibre. Unlike its historic forebear, however, it has a see-through sapphire-glass back that in no way detracts from its water-resistance to 12 bar. All in all, we think this watch looks great, though it’s possible that we were a little over enthusiastic at the outset. Does this watch really stand out from the other Vintage Collection timepieces? To be honest, not really. It’s almost as if they are made to the same formula; platinum+silver+leather+copy a classic look = profit? Rolex Sea-Dweller Replica Regardless, it’s certainly not terrible. We’re simply judging IWC by their own high standards, which we are sure they will respect.
